In the movie “The 13th Warrior” starring Antonio Banderas, he plays a man who finds himself in the midst of a group of Viking warriors.
One night, as he sits and listens to the warriors knowing full well he’s being mocked, but not understanding their language, he begins paying attention to them.
He studies them.
Learns how they communicate.
And after biting his tongue, one night, after eavesdropping on conversations fully understanding them for weeks, he throws an insult at Viking warrior after he’s insulted him in his language.
You could see it in their surprised faces. “He understands us”.
No one is more surprised than the Viking he had just insulted.
One of them asked how he learned their language.
He responded with “I listened”
All he did was pay attention to them.
And he had found a way to interpret their language to something he could understand and respond to.
