I had to laugh at this news.
“One student asked what Monsanto was doing to counter the “bad science” around their work. Dr. Moar (A representative of Monsanto), perhaps forgetting that this was a public event, then revealed that Monsanto indeed had “an entire department” (waving his arm for emphasis) dedicated to “debunking” science which disagreed with theirs. As far as I know this is the first time that a Monsanto functionary has publically admitted that they have such an entity which brings their immense political and financial weight to bear on scientists who dare to publish against them. The Discredit Bureau will not be found on their official website. ”
Sounds like someone else I know spending a great deal of time, energy, and money debunking multiple realities 😉
How’s that working for you, by the way?
More on the original article can be seen on Above Top Secret, here.
On a final note, Monsanto is a company which genetically engineers crops and seeds which increase yields and have built in resistance and immunities to the negative effects of herbicides, pesticides, and germs in general.
Monsanto’s been vicious with often ridiculous litigation about crop germination – that is – birds and winds spreading the higher priced seeds of the Monsanto seeds to neighboring regions. But they’re clearly in new territory – so a little overprotectiveness of what they have may be warranted.
I’m actually a supporter of the genetic modification of what Monsanto does, but am on the fence about it’s legal policy.
But ‘attacking’ debunking science in my opinion may actually hasten their own fall. If they could ‘leverage’ this new science to make their products better or expand their community – this might actually do something better than spreading negative PR.
